MNDSGN's Snax EP makes you feel sexy again as it gently guides you toward sonic bliss....
The perfect combination of attempting to bang out waaaay too much shit in an unreasonable length of time - 1. A load of laundry 2. Editing some images with my badass new graphic tablet 3. Setting up new bedroom set - combined with the 3 or 4 Rolling Rocks had me in the zone. I was able to dedicate about 65 brain cells to each additional task, so when the motivational soundtrack I was listening to ended I was happy to see a new album by a familiar name, MNDSGN, so I could just hit play and get back to it. I realized today that MNDSGN is familiar bc I was talking shit about not liking the concept of lo-fi in general and how Stone's Throw will have some of my favorite artist's projects release right beside some abhorrent, unlistenable dumpster fires that are an affront to God, such as MNDSGN in particular. Truth is, Stone's Throw has nothing but talent on their roster, it's just that I'm not always feeling a 20 minute long homage to obscure jazz ensembles reimagined for the 21st century or vaporwave with a 120 tempo funk bassline. I have been trying to find another album by MNDSGN I can vibe to and so far I haven't found 1 song that has registered as much more than "Tolerable" but I haven't gotten violently sick either so.... eh, probably good background music for studying, or some other chill activity/setting..... maybe an avant-garde funeral home?
The catalyst for today's investigation was Snax, an EP released just recently that slipped past my radar for a few weeks. I know my son gets down with latte and scone music on occasion so I wanted to include his observations in this post but I haven't received his lab report yet and I have other shit to do today so, I'll add an edit later. I gave this EP another spin today and investigated the uniqueness of this compared to the rest of this dude's catalog. From what I've read our boy MNDSGN is a SoCal producer/DJ named Ringgo Anchetta with a handful of full-length albums released on Stone's Throw since joining their team in '14. He's worked with some people from Stone's Throw, and some other people that weren't, IDK.... every article I've read mentions he's of Filipino descent so that must be relevant in some way, I have no idea what context would benefit from a racial-composition declaration but I'll have to rely on actual paid journalists' judgment on the inclusion of potentially sensitive personal information about artists' heritage, keep it moving, and lead by example by minding my own business.
Ringgo has clearly started taking control of his narrative, with nearly 2 dozen releases, mastery of the Casio keyboard, wizardry of the wheels, and a familiarity of the crates that is a hallmark of his dedication... why not take a pic of him in front of a brick wall dressed like Sherlock Holmes? His body language tells me he thinks the "traditional Asian attire" thing is maybe taking it bit too far, ya know, and there are so many other photo opps they could have thrown together, I'm just sayin....... Snax is a bit of a departure from what Stone's Throw probably has him contractually obligated to create, but not out his scope by any means. There are some more mixtapes of his floating around somewhere and I plan on intercepting them when I get done writing this. For now, get acquainted with MNDSGN....
