Non-Phixion stiff-armed the 'crazy whiteboy' stereotype that plagues hip hop, focusing on more complex, politically-motivated subject matter, delivered with deadly accuracy.
Founded in Brooklyn amidst the madness of the early/mid 1990s, Non-Phixion was the brainchild of MC Serch as a vehicle for his main dude Sabac Red to get on. DJ Eclipse was shoulder-tapped for a spot behind the booth and a young ILL BILL got his break, which would eventually lead to La Coka Nostra fame and CEO of his own label. Over the course of a year Non-Phixion added Goretex as the 3rd emcee and had recorded a 12" single. Bad luck and shit timing conspired to deny N-P a record deal, but they kept at it, releasing singles and promoting themselves on the street. Eventually surpassing a monumental 100K units sold without any support 'The Future is Now LP' dropped in 2002.
After 7 years of self promotion, touring, writing, and recording as Non-Phixion their goal was realized. 'The Future is Now' was instantly recognized as a masterpiece and the crew was propelled even farther into notoriety as they each embarked on solo careers.
SaBac Red released 3 albums with Psycho-Logical-Records, in addition to his collabs with SnowGoons, Immortal Technique, and some other loud, pissed-off artists from that scene.
ILL BILL released a joint called Circle of Tyrants with some of his boys before moving on to more unique projects. La Coka Nostra is a loose collective of loud, mostly-caucasian rappers with Tommy Boy roots that ILL BILL founded as a gathering point for other angry, aging, artists to have a safe place to yell at each other and act hard, I assume. He remains active in several projects.
DJ Eclipse has remained a cornerstone of the DJ community, working at Fat Beats, hosting a radio show, and dropping critically-acclaimed remix albums.
Goretex pursued the darker elements of his musical taste, releasing 'The Art of Dying' which is full of pagan imagery and horror before committing fully to the trope and changing his stage name to Gore Elohim. "Gore" cranked it up to 10 with the release of 'Electric Lucifer' , an assault to the senses and an affront to the arts, in 2013.
Non-Phixion was clearly greater than sum of it's parts, and destined to be a short-lived perfect storm. As evidenced by the trajectories of the former bandmates careers we were fortunate to get what we did.
